Born on April 15, 1960, at the Château du Belvédère in Brussels, Philippe became the seventh King of the Belgians when he ascended the throne in 2013. In the eyes of many, he has successfully embraced his role and today embodies a humane and modern monarchy. From his often moving speeches to symbolic trips such as his visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, our King has managed to leave his mark and assert a style quite different from that of his father, King Albert II.

Gotha then invites you to meet a devoted fan of our sovereigns. At nearly 90 years old, Huguette never misses a royal birthday. Mrs. Huart loves shaking royal hands and offering gifts to Their Majesties. She opened the doors of her apartment, filled with memorabilia, to us.

His name is Filippo Sorcinelli, and he is the tailor to the popes. He has dressed Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, as well as many bishops and cardinals. For Gotha, he opened the doors of his workshop, from which his creations are sent all over the world.

You will then discover the retreats of our sovereigns. Whenever they have a little free time, Philippe and Queen Mathilde like to get away. They own a house on the Île d'Yeu, off the coast of Brittany. They also enjoy skiing in Switzerland, walking the paths of Camino de Santiago, or retreating to the Château de Ciergnon near Rochefort.

Fireworks, concerts, grand parades… When a sovereign blows out their candles, it is not just a simple birthday party — it is a national event! From Belgium to the United Kingdom, and from Sweden to Luxembourg, some royal celebrations remain etched in history. But which royal birthday is the most spectacular?

Mysteries in Morocco, Monegasque splendor, princely creativity and Belgian traditions: this episode of Gotha offers a richly contrasted panorama. In the shadows of palaces and beneath gilded cathedral ceilings, royal stories intersect — yet never resemble one another.

Lalla Salma, once the wife of Mohammed VI, has reappeared after years of absence — a return that rekindles the mystery surrounding a princess who had seemingly become a ghost.

Next, we head to the Rock, where the national celebration surrounding Albert II once again delivered its share of carefully orchestrated glamour. And among Monaco’s jet set, two Belgians slipped in among the distinguished guests.

We then move to the London suburbs, where a Belgian prince dares to enchant: Simon de Mérode creates a dream in motion, surprising audiences with a fairy-tale spectacle dedicated to British royalty.

And while some innovate, others uphold age-old rites: the Te Deum of November 15, a centuries-old ceremony and a discreet barometer of Belgian political life.
